High School Apprenticeship Programs

There are several youth apprenticeship programs available to introduce high school students to the trades as early as possible. These programs are all dual-credit programs, allowing the students to earn credits toward both their high school diploma and their post-secondary apprenticeship program.

  1. High school Apprenticeship Program (HSAP): This program is all about hands-on, practical experience. It provides an opportunity for early entry and interest building for the students. They are able to acquire paid work experience, as well as credit toward their high school diploma. Their experience in the program also transfers to level one of their apprenticeship programs.
  2. Provincial Accreditation Through High School (PATHS): These programs cover material related to apprenticeship programs while still attending high school and provides credit toward the completion of their apprenticeship programs. When you decide what trade you would like to practice, ensure that the pre-apprenticeship program you take is accredited.
  • Student Apprenticeship Work Experience Co-op (SAWEC): This is a placement program designed to help students find paid training opportunities during their summers with the Manitoba Government, under the supervision of a designated trainer or journeyperson. Application for this program begins in spring.

High school students looking to enter an apprenticeship program should be aware that there may be additional information required to apply for the program.

  1. If you are from a non-funded independent school or home school and are looking for academic credit, an additional step is required for submitting an application for the program. You must either:
    1. Register with a school in order for the school to assess you and grant you academic credits, and you must submit a letter from said school with our application.
    2. Be endorsed by the Home School Program of Manitoba Education. They must submit a letter stating that they will be responsible for assessing the student for credit. Contact homeschooling@gov.mb.ca or call 1-800-262-3069 extension 8138 if you are interested in taking this route.
  2. If you are a mature student looking to participate in the HSAP program, you require either:
    1. Completion of Manitoba’s grade nine math and English curriculum or requirements.
    2. Assessment of current standing in Manitoba grade 10, 11, or 12 math and grade 10, 11, or 12 English.

If you require assistance preparing for these assessments, Adult Learning Centres are a great resource.
